Story Behind The Famous Amos - Secret Recipes

This is a true story.

My daughter and I had just finished a muffin at Famous Amos Café in Bangsar & decided to have some cookies. Because both of us are such a cookie lovers, we decided to try the "Hawaiian Nut Cookie".

It was so excellent that I asked if they would give me the recipe and the waitress said with a small frown "I'm afraid cannot". Well I said, "Would you let me buy the recipe?"

With a cute smile, she said "YES". I asked how much and she responded, "only two fifty, it's a great deal!" I said with approval, "Just add it to my bill"

Thirty days later, I received my VISA statement from Famous Amos and it was RM285.00. I looked again and remembered I had only spent RM9.95 for two muffins and about RM20.00 for a pie. As I glanced at the bottom of the statement, it said, "cookie recipe - RM250.00". That's outrages!!!

I called the Famous Amos's Accounting Dept. and told them that the waitress said it was "two-fifty", which clearly does not mean "two hundred and fifty dollars" by any POSSIBLE interpretation of the phrase. Famous Amos refused to budge. They would not refund my money, because according to them, "What the waitress told you is not our problem. You have already seen the recipe - we absolutely will not refund your money at this point."

I explain to her the criminal statues which govern fraud in Malaysia . I threatened to refer them to police for engaging in fraud. I was basically told, "Do what you want, we don't care, and we're not refunding your money." I waited for a moment, thinking of how I could get even, or even try to get any of my money back. I just said, "Okay, you people got my RM2-50.00 , and now I'm going to have a RM250.00 worth of fun." I told her that I was going to see to it that every cookie lover in Malaysia with an email account has a RM250.00 cookie recipe from Famous Amos...for free... She replied, "I wish you wouldn't do this" I said, "Well you should have thought of that before you stole from me", and slammed down the phone on her.

So, here it is!!! Please, please please pass it on to everyone you can possibly think of. I paid RM250.00 dollars for this...I don't want Famous Amos to ever get another cent off of this recipe.....

Recipe may be halved:

2 cups butter
4 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups brown sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal (measure oatmeal & blend in blender to a fine powder)
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
18 oz. Cadbury bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla

Method:
- Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.
- Add chocolate chips, Cadbury bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet.. bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 122 cookies..

Have fun trying the recipe !!

This is not a joke - this a true story...Ride free, this isn't some stupid chain letter either..pass it on...if you don't, you won't die or get dumped...you'll just do the world an injustice...

My Bolognese Spaghetti with Tuna

I was thinking about cooking bolognese spaghetti yesterday but forgot to buy the minced beef. So, I searched around my kitchen to get some meaty for my spaghetti and there I got a can of tuna in water.

So, I use my creativity to create my own style of bolognese spaghetti with tuna.

Here's the ingredients that I used:

8 cloves of garlic (chopped)
1 medium onion (chopped)
1 can of 6 oz. tomato paste
3 tbs of Prego Original Pasta sauce
Half can of sliced button mushroom
1 can of tuna in water / brine
Angel hair pasta (or any other long pasta of your choice)
Extra virgin olive oil
Salt
Black pepper

Steps:
1. Drain the tuna and keep the water for later use. Smash the tuna and mix it with 4 cloves of finely chopped garlic. Set aside.
2. Cook the pasta according to the packet instructions - approximately 3.5 minutes for Angel Hair pasta to cook 'al dente'. Thick pasta might take slightly longer dependent on the type of pasta used.
3. When pasta is cooked, drain it and rinse with cold water. Set aside.
4. Heat the frying pan with 3 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil on medium-low heat. Throw in the remaining 4 cloves of choppped garlic. When the garlic turns golden, put in the chopped onion and fry until it soften.
5. Now, add in the sliced button mushrooms and followd by the smashed tuna. Fry for 1 minute before adding the tomato paste and Prego pasta sauce.
6. Turn up the heat to medium and pour in the water from the canned tuna that we keep in the first step. Add in 6 oz. of plain water and stir well.
7. Heat through and mix for approximately 2 minutes. Add in salt to taste.
8. Now serve your pasta with this rich tuna tomato sauce, top with some black pepper (freshly ground black pepper is recommended though).
9. You can also add some Parmesan cheese and dried mixed herb for an extra kick!

Too bad that I forgot to take the picture of this Angel Hair Pasta with Tuna Bolognese sauce that I cooked last night. But trust me, it was damn good. My hubby gave it a thumb-up!

I still have some remaining of the cooked tuna tomato sauce which I refrigerated. I guess it must be consumed within the next 7 days. So, I will post the photo of this pasta the next time I cook it for my hubby, not going to be long though. :)

Stay tuned okay ?

Healing and Cleansing with Barley

High in fibre, barley is also a kidney cleanser. Better yet, regular intake of it helps prevent heart disease.

BARLEY water was always a regular drink when we were still living at home. Whenever we had to go for a medical exam that included a urine test, my mum would make us drink barley water a day before the test to make sure we got a positive result!

My mother was a wise woman. I later found out from an Australian naturopath that barley is known to be a kidney cleanser, and he happily downed glasses of it at a meal we had in a coffee shop here.

Barley is good for your intestinal health too. Try to eat the barley grains you find in your drink or sweet broth with fu chook (beancurd skin) and ginkgo nuts.

It's high in fibre which feeds the friendly bacteria in the colon and helps speed up the transit of fecal matter in it. In this way it helps prevent haemorrhoids and colon cancer.

The propionic acid and beta glucan from barley's insoluble fibre also help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of gallstones.

Eating barley regularly is a preventive step against heart disease as, besides the fibre content, it is also high in niacin, a B vitamin good for lowering cholesterol.

Diabetics should eat more barley as the fibre will prevent blood sugar levels from rising too high. It also provides relief from constipation or diarrhoea for those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Barley is rich in selenium which prevents cancer and relieves symptoms of asthma and arthritis. It is a good source of manganese, copper and phosphorous.

Malt sugar comes from sprouted barley which, when fermented, is an ingredient in beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Barley, whose Latin name is Hordeum vulgare, has been cultivated for more than 10,000 years.

Since ancient times, barley has been used for healing purposes and has been known to the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Athletes in Greece and Rome in those days were known to eat barley bread to give them strength.

Besides the usual things we do with barley, I enjoy having it in a western soup. The larger pearl barley is used and I love the sticky bite of it.

Here's a recipe for barley soup:

Barley Soup with Roasted Garlic

1 cup pearl barley

5 cloves whole garlic, roasted

2 litres chicken stock, steeped from 1 chicken breasts simmered in three litres water

2 tbsps vegetable oil

2 large onions, diced

2 carrots, diced

2 stalks celery, diced

150g turkey ham, cut up

1 tsp ground white pepper

1 tsps sea salt or to taste

1 tbsp chopped parsley

Method:

1. Wash barley and soak it in a bowl of water for three hours. Drain.

2. Heat oil in pan and fry onions. Add carrots and celery, then the barley and fry for three minutes.

3. Add chicken stock, pepper and roasted garlic and simmer over low heat for at least an hour, or until barley is soft.

4. Add salt to taste and serve the soup garnished with chopped parsley.
