Forms For EPF Contribution At 11%

Quoted from EPF Website:

Members of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) who wish to maintain the employee’s monthly contribution rate at 11 per cent from January 2009 wage may obtain Form KWSP 17A (AHL) Khas from all EPF branches or download it from myEPF website beginning 01-Dec-2008. Fully completed forms can be submitted to the members’ respective employers for onward submission to the EPF.

The EPF has also made available Form KWSP 17AA (AHL) Khas to facilitate employers who wish to apply on behalf of more than two employees.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister YAB Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak recently announced the reduction of the employees’ monthly statutory contribution rate from 11 per cent to 8 per cent, effective from January 2009 wage for a period of two years. The measure is taken to help increase members’ disposable income given the current economic climate. The higher disposable income will in turn support domestic consumption and help sustain the momentum of positive economic growth.

In relation to reduction in the statutory contribution rate which will take effect from January 2009 wage to December 2010 wage, a new monthly contributions schedule has been issued. Members and employers may download the new schedule from their website or get the schedule from any of EPF branches nationwide.

Beware: New Credit Card Scam!

If you have a Visa or Mastercard you might want to read the following.

Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it.

This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.

What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation.

My husband was called on Wednesday from 'VISA', and I was called on Thursday from 'MasterCard'.

The scam works like this: Person calling says, 'This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge Number is 12460, your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?'

When you say 'No', the caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?'

You say 'yes'. The caller continues - 'I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security.

You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?'

Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works:

The caller then says, 'I need to verify you are in possession of your card '. He'll ask you to turn your card over and look for some numbers. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the Security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him.

After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say, 'That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?' After you say 'No', the caller then thanks you and states, 'Don't hesitate to call back if you do', and hangs up.

You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. We are glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.

Long story made short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation.

The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a 'Jason Richardson of MasterCard' with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed a Police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily!

This is a genuine scam operating in Australia and is likely to come here. So, don't give your Security Number at all cost...

News: New Toll Payment Gadget

Malaysians may have to fork out more money for a new toll system in Malayisa. The success of the current system for the Smart Tag has spurred the Works Ministry to come out with better ideas to produce a much improved gadget.

I wonder whether the owners of the current Smart Tag (I'm one of them) will get to exchange and/or top up with additional money to obtain the latest gadget (which is under trial run at the moment).

I got my Smart Tag at RM100 during a promotion previously. Initially it was being retailed at RM200. The current gadget are being used by many many many road users (ain't this a waste of money for common citizens). Not only that for users would be wasting money but the government will have to install additional electronic stuff at all toll plazas to accommodate another new toll system. Not replacing, mind you!

They mentioned that road users could also purchase this new unit and the current Smart Tag could still be used. This new unit's plus point - could record payment at high speed. What high speed? It won't miss recording a motor vehicle's new gadget even if the car was travelling at 100km per hour. That is total madness.

Imagine driving towards the toll plaza at 100km per hour and squeeze into the tight toll lane. Lorries and buses would be crashing through all the toll plazas in Malaysia with that speed.

Licking Envelopes

A woman was working in a post office in California .

One day she licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady found a cut on her tongue. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong. Her tongue was not sore or anything. A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!!

There were cockroach eggs on the seal of the envelope. The egg was able to hatch inside of her tongue, because of her saliva. It was warm and moist...

This is a true story reported on CNN.

Andy Hume wrote: Hey, I used to work in an envelope factory. You wouldn't believe the....things that float around in those gum applicator trays. I haven't licked an envelope for years!' I used to work for a print shop (32 years ago) and we were told NEVER to lick the envelopes. I never understood why until I had to go into storage and pull out 2500 envelopes that were already printed and saw several squads of cockroaches roaming around inside a couple of boxes with eggs everywhere. They eat the glue on the envelopes.

After reading this you will never lick another envelope or stamp again!

Government Allowance for Senior Citizen Aged 60 And Above

There is an email circulating that says Selangor state government will be giving a one-time cash allowance of RM3500 to senior citizens who are 60 years old and above.
I guess there is some misinterpretation. What it actually is referring to is a Free Takaful Programme.

It is an insurance scheme. This Takaful protection programme worths RM3500 is provided for senior citizens aged 60 and above who have been residents of Selangor for a minimum of 1 year.

RM3500 is payable upon dealth by the insurance company of which RM500 is payable in 24 hours after death.

Contaminated Dory Fish aka Pangas Fish

Do you eat this frozen fish called Pangas ? ( Pangasius, Vietnamese River Cobbler, White Catfish, Gray Sole )

Industrially farmed in Vietnam along the Mekong River, Pangas or whatever they're calling it, has only been recently introduced tothe French market. However, in a very short amount of time, it has grown in popularity in France. The French are slurping up Pangas like it's their last meal of soup noodles. They are very, very affordable (cheap), are sold in filets with no bones and they have a neutral (bland) flavor and texture; many would compare it to cod and sole, only much cheaper.

But as tasty as some people may find it, there's, in fact, something hugely unsavory about it. I hope the information provided here will serve as very important information for you and your future choices. Here's why I think it is better left in the shops (and not on your dinner plates):

1. Pangas are teeming with high levels of poisons and bacteria.
( industrial effluents, arsenic, and toxic and hazardous by-products of the growing industrial sector, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT and its metabolites (DDTs), metal contaminants, chlordane-related compounds (CHLs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers(HCHs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) ).

The reasons are that the Mekong River is one of the most polluted rivers on the planet and this is where pangas are farmed and industries along the river dump chemicals and industrial waste directly into it. To Note: a friend lab tests these fish and tells us to avoid eating them due to high amounts of contamination. Regardless of the reports and recommendations against selling them, the supermarkets still sell them to the general public knowing they are contaminated.

2. They freeze Pangas in contaminated river water.

3. Pangas are not environmentally sustainable, a most unsustainable food you could possibly eat - 'Buy local' means creating the least amount of environmental harm as possible.

This is the very opposite end of the spectrum of sustainable consumerism. Pangas are raised in Vietnam .. Pangas are fed food that comes from Peru (more on that below), their hormones ( which are injected into the female Pangas ) come from China .. ( More about that below ) and finally, they are transported from Vietnam to France. That's not just a giant carbon foot print, that's a carbon continent of a foot print.

4. There's nothing natural about Pangas - They're fed dead fish remnants and bones, dried and ground into a flour, from South America, manioc (cassava ) and residue from soy and grains. This kind of nourishment doesn't even remotely resemble what they eat in nature. But what it does resemble is the method of feeding mad cows ( cows were fed cows, remember? ). What they feed pangas is completely unregulated so there are most likely other dangerous substances and hormones thrown into the mix. The pangas grow at a speed light (practically! ) : 4 times faster than in nature. so it makes you wonder what exactly is in their food? Your guess is as good as mine.

5. Pangas are Injected with Hormones Derived from Urine - I don't know how someone came up with this one out but they've discovered that if they inject female Pangas with hormones made from the dehydrated urine of pregnant women, the female Pangas grow much quicker and produce eggs faster (one Panga can lay approximately 500,000 eggs at one time ). Essentially, they're injecting fish with hormones ( they come all of the way from a pharmaceutical company in China ) to speed up the process of growth and reproduction. That isn't good. Some of you might not mind eating fish injected with dehydrated pee, so if you don't, good for you, but just consider the rest of the reasons to NOT eat it..

6. You get what you pay for - and then some.

Don't be lured in by insanely cheap price of Pangas. Is it worth risking your health and the health of your family?

7. Buying Pangas supports unscrupulous, greedy evil corporations and food conglomerates that don't care about the health and well-being of human beings. They only are concerned about selling as many pangas as possible to unsuspecting consumers. These corporations only care about selling and making more money at whatever cost to the public.

8. Pangas will make you sick - If ( for reasons in #1 above ) you don't get immediately ill with vomiting, diarrhea and effects from severe food poisoning, congratulations, you have an iron stomach! But you're still ingesting POISON not poisson.

Final important note: Because of the prodigious amount of availability of Pangas, be warned that they will certainly find their way into other foods: surimi ( those pressed fish things, imitation crab sticks ), fish sticks, fish terrines, and probably in some pet foods. ( Warn your dogs and cats and hamsters and gerbils and even your pet fish! )

RM2.00 charge for making a 103 directory call through Maxis?

Maxis users, please take note... I got this from a forwarded email, I myself don't use Maxis and need someone who's Maxis user to clarify the following:

--------- * * * * * ---------

STOP CALLING 103 through your MAXIS number.

If you are using Maxis network and please be alert that now the new charges for making 103 (TM Directory) was increased from 30 sen to RM2.00 per call.

I just found out from my maxis statement dated 21/6/08 today and I rang up the Maxis 123 and been told the new rate started in May 2008 (which non of the Maxis users are aware of this increase) and since I'm not aware of this new adjustment, they are willing to waive it for this month only (RM2.00 per call to 103).

Shocking right?

Beware: The Resurfaced North-South Expressway is SLIPPERY! Take Caution!

Just for your info in case you or family and friends frequent this stretch at Tanjong Malim. Not too sure if this is 100% true but won't hurt to be careful.

---------------------------------------

Dear Team TV3 and The Star,

I am writing again after having read the Star today on the bus accident yesterday at Tanjong Malim. As reported in the Star, there are witnesses who claimed that the bus driver was not speeding and he wasn't a reckless driver either. Instead, they too FELT THAT THE ROAD WAS SLIPPERY!!!

I am therefore quite confident that the 'wearing course' of the new lanes are therefore NOT SUITABLE FOR EXPRESSWAY!!!

I urge TV3 or The Star to intervene and initiate a quick test to be carried out immediately BEFORE MORE CASUALTIES ARE REPORTED.

Thank you.
regards,

Jensen Yeoh.

---------------------------------------

Dear TV3 and The Star,

I am a frequent user of our North-South Expressway and I have this IMPORTANT experience to highlight and share:-

I was driving back to Penang yesterday afternoon (24 June 08) when I saw the unfortunate accident in the opposite direction involving the passenger bus that skidded and overturned at Tanjung Malim. I didn't know that the skidded bus was from hometown Penang until I watched TV3 news later in the evening and was shocked to learn that the accident took two lives.

Now, this is what I need to share:-

I am a building contractor with over twenty years of experience and I have been driving my 5 series BMW (latest Generation and a dammed solid road holding car) each time I traveled to KL. Lately, the new extended 3 lanes highway had been opened up for use and since then, I have also been using it quite often.

HOWEVER, when I used it each time it is WET, I can really 'feel' that the new road surface is extremely SLIPPERY! To share with some of you, my car comes with a built-in traction control mechanism (skidding prevention mechanism) and you can feel it each time it is activated. Previously, I don't come across this kind of slippery feel except when I drive over a puddle of water at certain speed.

From my observation as a building contractor, the 'wearing course' of the new road surface could be TOO FINE OR TOO SMOOTH and TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for highway use!

The wearing course (top premix layer) mix design for highways should be of minimum 20mm coarse aggregate mix that will give us the required bond between the surface and our tyres. Fine wearing course (14mm coarse aggregate size and below) is only suitable for normal road. (A proper test need to be carried out to determine the mix design of the wearing course).

Since the opening of the three lane highway, I had seen cars skidding in front me or in the opposite direction and approximately 2 weeks ago, one of my friends who is also a frequent user of our NSE, came to share with me about his slippery feeling as well as the many skidded cars he had seen lately.

I am highlighting this to TV3 and The Star with the hope that a thorough investigation could be carried out immediately to find out how or what causes the bus to skid. A proper and independent test need to be carried out urgently to determine the design mix of the wearing course.

THIS CAN SAVE LIVES.

FOR THOSE BCC RECIPIENTS, PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH ALL YOUR FRIENDS. IF YOU ARE USING THE NEW LANES AND IF IT IS WET, MAKE SURE YOU DRIVE SLOWLY!!!!

An Incredible Love Story

An incredible love story has come out of China recently and managed to touch the world.

It is a story of a man and an older woman who ran off to live and love each other in peace for over half a century.

The 70-year-old Chinese man who hand-carved over 6,000 stairs up a mountain for his 80-year-old wife has passed away in the cave which has been the couple's home for the last 50 years.

Over 50 years ago, Liu Guojiang a 19 year-old boy, fell in love with a 29 year-old widowed mother named Xu Chaoqin..

In a twist worthy of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, friends and relatives criticized the relationship because of the age difference and the fact that Xu already had children.

At that time, it was unacceptable and immoral for a young man to love an older woman.. To avoid the market gossip and the scorn of their communities, the couple decided to elope and lived in a cave in Jiangjin County in Southern ChongQing Municipality.

In the beginning, life was harsh as hey had nothing, no electricity or even food. They had to eat grass and roots they found in the mountain, and Liu made a kerosene lamp that they used to light up their lives.

Xu felt that she had tied Liu down and repeatedly asked him, 'Are you regretful? Liu always replied, 'As long as we are industrious, life will improve.'

In the second year of living in the mountain, Liu began and continued for over 50 years, to hand-carve the steps so that his wife could get down the mountain easily.

Half a century later in 2001, a group of adventurers were exploring the forest and were surprised to find the elderly couple and the over 6,000 hand-carved steps. Liu MingSheng, one of their seven children said, 'My parents loved each other so much, they have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and never been apart a single day. He hand carved more than 6,000 steps over the years for my mother's convenience, although she doesn't go down the mountain that much.'

The couple had lived in peace for over 50 years until last week. Liu, now 72 years, returned from his daily farm work and collapsed. Xu sat and prayed with her husband as he passed away in her arms. So in love with Xu, was Liu, that no one was able to release the grip he had on his wife's hand even after he had passed away.

'You promised me you'll take care of me, you'll always be with me until the day I died, now you left before me, how am I going to live without you?'

Xu spent days softly repeating this sentence and touching her husband's black coffin with tears rolling down her cheeks.

In 2006, their story became one of the top 10 love stories from China , collected by the Chinese Women Weekly. The local government has decided to preserve the love ladder and the place they lived as a museum, so this love story can live forever.

Credit Cards remove 20-day interest free - starting July 2008

Credit cardholders, it pays to pay up in full

I have just received a forwarded email saying that all Credit card companies are going to scrap the 20-day interest free period for those who do not pay up their bills in full. With effective from July 2008, credit cardholders who do not pay up in full and on-time may end up paying more.

Under current arrangements, credit cardholders enjoy a 20-day interest-free period on their new retail transactions. However, after July, only those who make full payments before the due date will be entitled to the interest-free days. Those who make only partial or minimum payment will be charged interest on the day the new purchases are posted to the card's accounts. In addition, the late payment charge is now a minimum of RM10, or 1% on total outstanding balances; previously it was 1% of the minimum payment amount.

Cardholders who cannot be prompt in their minimum payments because they do not have the money are now going to get into bigger debts!

Those who use their credit card for convenience or to earn points should now pay close attention to the outstanding amount. If you continue to pay in full diligently, you will not be affected. Those who intend to pay the bill in full, buy pay in round numbers or pay the wrong amount will be severely impacted if he makes a big purchase on his card, as he will be charged interest on this purchase from the date of transaction.

So, use your credit card wisely. Use cash for any retail transaction if possible to avoid getting into bigger debts due to the interest compounding effect.

Cancel any unused credit cards, maintain only one for emergency use.

Crime Attempt that Happened Last Night @ Damasara Heights

An incident happened last night relating to my colleague's brother. He just finished work at around 1 am and was on his way home. He stopped at a traffic light and notice there were about 5 motorcycles (mat rempit) in front of his car. Suddenly one of the guys came down and walk next to his car. Next thing you know, he took out a rod and smash his brother's car window (damaged as shown in picture below) intending to injure him and rob him of his belonging.

He was going for a second attempt when his brother managed to step on the accelerator and sped off. They did try to follow but gave up after a short attempt. He was lucky that the rod narrowly missed his head and avoided a serious or probably fatal injury.

This incident can happen to anyone...so please be careful especially when you are driving alone late at night.
